Transitioning to Spring...

March 31, 2014

It's the time of year when the weather can be very up in the air throughout the day...cold in the morning but warming up in the afternoons.

 Layering is key!

The last time I wore this Loft dress was with tights, tall boots and a denim vest back when snow was still on the ground.  Transitioning this long sleeved dress was as simple as bare legs, ankle boots and my denim jacket for the early morning and chilly evenings.

Old Navy pants (shop similar here), Francesca's top (shop similar here), Forever 21 necklace, Gifted Jessica Simpson wedges for Christmas 12'

For the past week I have settled into a very simple dress code for work, play, weekends and errands. Just a very basic tee (these from Francesca's are on serious rotation in my wardrobe) a pair of colored/regular denim pants and a pair of cute shoes and a simple necklace.  I am liking the simplicity of getting ready and of course being comfortable all day.

Topshop heels, Target belt (click here to buy), CAbi blazer, JC Penny blouse (click here for similar), Loft pants, Altard State earrings

I absolutely love this outfit but I cannot take full credit for it.  I was browsing Pinterest for outfit inspiration and came across this and realized I had my own similar pieces needed to make.this.happen.

Ashley's Tip Of The Day- Just because you are not petite, which I am clearly not, don't underestimate shopping in the petite section. I was browsing the petite section at JC Penny and found this polka dot blouse with leather trim for $12 dollars people!

Forever 21 sweater and necklace (click here to buy), Target wedges (click here to buy), Tory Burch crossbody bag, I Heart Ronson for JC Penny skirt

I love the pastel trend for this season but I always start shopping "trends" by taking baby steps instead of spending lots of money on something that might not last.  On a recent trip to Forever 21 I saw this pastel pink sweater for a steal...couldn't resist the necklace either.

Nothing like getting a "dress" in the mail only to try it on and it fits like a shirt!  I was super depressed (for like a minute) but then decided that I liked my flowy new top.

Proof that Spring is coming...a lone little buttercup that I managed to get into every picture.

Are cargo pants still cool?  I found these buried underneath a bunch of jeans as I was cleaning out my closet the other day. They have been missing since 2011...

Our San Diego Vacation: Good Eats, Part Two

March 4, 2014

So yesterday's post made me crave California food so bad so what do I do...make it a two part blog post of course!

image
I found out about this restaurant by randomly searching Instagram and finding @lajollamom whom I immediately started following aka stalking her pics to get the inside scoop on local grub.  She had posted a picture that looked pretty yummy so the husband and I decided to give it a go.

Even if you know what you are looking for and have an iPhone to give directions, this restaurant is hard to find.  Granted- it was dark outside but it is tucked back behind another well lit restaurant and off to the side of it's signage.  We literally were timid to walk up to the building (put the restaurant name ON THE BUILDING PEOPLE) cause we still didn't know if it was the right place or not even standing a few feet away.

Once inside it seemed like a regular sports bar with television's mounted everywhere and garage like doors that made it an open air atmosphere type of place.  I ordered the Mahi Mahi sandwich and my husband ordered the Cajun Turkey Club and we both got the house chips as a side.  Both sandwiches had a really tasty citrus aioli sauce on them and the homemade house chips were my favorite part of my meal.  Also check out the craft beer selection if you go.

4.  The Public House

The Public House is literally a "house" that has been converted into a restaurant and it was so cute! The seating inside was very limited and was all taken when we got there so once again we opted for outside patio seating.  The patio was a huge area and had space heaters set up everywhere along with a bunch of flat screen tv's mounted up along the bar but we got one of the outside booths to the side.

Since part of the slogan was "Locally World Famous Angus and Kobe Wagyu Burgers" we both decided to try them out.  All of the beef that they serve is "farm to fork"  and served with shoestring fries. I got the Surf and Turf Burger which consisted of  1/2 lb. burger topped with Gruyere cheese, jumbo shrimp sauteed in garlic butter and tomato Bearnaise sauce (holy calories) and my husband ordered the Signature "La Jolla Cave" Bootlegger Burger which consisted of whiskey BBQ sauce, crispy onion straws, bacon and pepper jack cheese on top of a 1/2 lb. burger.  Both were great and very messy and once again we couldn't finish our meal and had to take half our burgers home.

The beer selection at The Public House could be a whole other post entirely because they offer an incredible 180 bottle choices from around the globe, 43 Belgian ales on tap, and also selections from local breweries and micro-brews! The beer menu was so overwhelming to me I just told our waitress what kind of beer I normally drink and just ordered a flight and called it a day. I was going cross-eyed looking at that intense menu.

We hit up plenty of other places on our trip like In-N-Out Burger and Wahoo's Fish Taco's to name a few, and honestly never had a bad meal the entire time we visited San Diego. I hope if you ever get the chance to go you have the same fabulous experience.

Our San Diego Vacation: Good Eats, Part One

March 2, 2014

I can not say enough about all the meals I enjoyed in San Diego during our vacation there.  Actually, I can not say enough about the city period! We absolutely loved it there and after we got home both of us agreed we would move there...if we found fabulous jobs...the cost of living wasn't so high...you get the picture.

I tried to document most of the places we ate and of course we couldn't get to all the places I wanted to try in just four days, but here are some of my recommendations of incredible good eats in the San Diego area.

Y'all...I am NOT kidding when I say I have had dreams about these taco's since I have been back in Tennessee.  The Cameron Taco's were like nothing I have ever tasted before.  I know we don't have "authentic" Mexican food here in the South so the closet thing I can compare these taco's to are the gorditas at Taco Bell (don't judge) and that's not even a comparison.  Imagine home made soft taco shells filled with melted cheese on a flat top grill so the cheese gets all bubbly and kinda has a crunch factor AND then loaded with spicy shrimp, avocado, cabbage, tomato and chipotle sauce...simply amazing.

We literally stumbled across this place just hours after landing and were starving and I was being super bitchy after traveling all day and wandered into the first place we found.  It's not very big at all with very limited seating (I'm assuming it's the California equivalent of a fast food Mexican place?) so we actually placed our order and went and sat outside cause the weather was beautiful...of course.  My husband got the chicken quesadilla and thought it was wonderful and then on our last meal before we left I requested The Taco Stand again (seriously...I'm addicted) and I got the same thing because I was obsessed and my husband got the California burrito and loved that meal too.  Andddd now my mouth is watering talking about those damn taco's...moving on.

I actually did quite a bit of research before our trip (follow my California Pinterest board here) and found this great brunch spot that was recommended by Travel and Leisure magazine.  I had read it gets crowded fast so we decided to go the morning after we arrived in San Diego since our internal time clocks were still on a three hour time difference and 7am was like 10am at home.

It was filling up fast even that early on a Saturday morning, so unfortunately I cannot describe to you what the interior looks like cause they were seating patio tables immediately and I am not a very patient person. On a side note- every single food place has patio seating that I saw and it's no surprise since San Diego is known for mild year-round climate.

First thing I took note of- the menu was freaking HUGE, like, there has to be 100 items on the menu huge. I knew I wanted breakfast food so thank goodness that eliminated a lot of stuff but still a ton of choices.  I finally settled on the Breakfast Burrito and added avocado (always) and the husband got the same thing but without avocado.

The picture above doesn't do it justice but the burritos were as big as your head. Neither one of us could finish our meal and had to take home leftovers (probably because I also ordered a side of pancakes for us to share) but it was soooo worth it cause the burrito and the pancakes were both delicious.

Stay tuned for Part Two tomorrow...
